| From Michael Daniels -- A Dramatic New Mokume Band One of our most popular Mokume patterns has always been a white-on-white color mix with fine lines and subtle contrasts. We wanted a second pattern in white-on-white, but with broader lines and bolder contrasts. When we described it, our customers responded with enthusiasm. In 2003, we began working on new Mokume patterns that would be set off by our new all-around rails. And early in 2004, we introduced three of our four planned patterns in the MD Ocean Waters Railed Series: Tasman Sea, Coral Reef, and Monterey Bay, which emphasized, in order, Yellow, Red, and Green 18-karat gold, accented with dark and light contrasting alloys. Our fourth new pattern, the white-on-white called Norwegian Deep, created problems. For nearly a year, we tried to make this design, and until recently, we ran into difficulties at every turn. The main metals, 18-karat Palladium White and our own SnowGold did not survive forging –- their properties of hardness and heat tolerance are almost opposite, and each billet would break, no matter what we did. We also found that none of the traditional dark alloys would work with the two pale metals. We researched and experimented for months. Finally, we decided that, since the tolerances for heat, pressure, and forging were so tight on these three metals in combination, we would have to make all the alloys in the Norwegian Deep pattern: the 18K Palladium White, a reformulated SnowGold, and the dark alloy. And in two weeks, we had a workable billet! Since we have to make these three alloys ourselves, we decided to make all the metals we use in our Mokume. Doing so gives us greater color control throughout our product line. Norwegian Deep, pictured above, is made of 18-karat MD Palladium White; MD SnowGoldtm; MD Kuro Shibuichi.
