Breakthrough From Michael Daniels: A Dramatic New Mokume Band

Looking to expand the range of their extremely popular white-on-white gold Mokume bands, the Michael Daniels team began working with new alloy combinations to get broader lines and bolder contrasts. But the metals that seemed best suited to this task -- 18K Palladium white, their own patented SnowGold plus a dark alloy for contrast -- frustrated them at every turn with their incompatible properties. But after months of experimentation, they had a breakthrough and are pleased to unveil their newest pattern, Norwegian Deep. Read the whole story, and get ordering details, by clicking here.

Curvaceous Lines and Sculptural Gemstones Combine in Sensual Jewelry by Nancy Ellinghaus

If ever a gemstone was caressed rather than bound by its gold mounting it is in the work of Colorado jeweler Nancy Ellinghaus. Her newest one-of-a-kind pieces center around unique stones by such well-regarded artists as Californian Steve Walters, and her bold and curvaceous jewelry makes strong use of negative space to accentuate the flowing lines of the gems she chooses. Some of it is quite reminiscent of the landscape that inspires her in her home state of Colorado. Others are just beautiful on their own. More examples and more information can be found here.

Ancient Science May be the Secret to the Beauty of This Contemporary Ring Design

Acacia's "Eternity" ring of 18k white gold and diamonds is based on the formula that 13th century Italian mathematician Fibonacci discovered in nature. Calling it the "golden ratio," he found that many plants follow this formula in the number of stems and leaves they have, it is often found in other aspects of nature and is sometimes used as a means to measure how beautiful a face is perceived. In the centuries since Fibonacci's discovery, architects and artists have applied this golden ratio to their works, and few have made something as stunning as Acacia's jewelry when following this formula. Designer Sevan Creates New Jewelry Imbued With the Spirit of Byzantine and Ottoman Art.

Even the most cursory glance at this ring gives one a sense of great antiquity and a rich cultural heritage. Yet it is not a reproduction of something hundreds of years old. It is a new work made by new designer Sevan Bicakci in Istanbul, and it is just one of a whole series that resonates with both the past and today. His new collection features ornamental carving of both stone and metal. It leaves no doubt as to its heritage, and still conveys a sense of beauty and spirit that is universal. Find out more by clicking here. High resolution images are located here.

globalDESIGN Show Returns to it's Most Successful Venue ~

Philadelphia in February 2005

The Jeweler's Resource announced that globalDESIGN, the international studio jeweler showcase that features 24 of the world's best designers during the fine craft market in February, will return in 2005 to its new home in Philadelphia at the Marriott.

Last year, the show moved from its earlier venue in Baltimore to Philadelphia where the weekend date pattern and better hotel amenities appealed to buyers and exhibitors alike. globalDESIGN is concurrent with, but independent from, The Buyer's Market of American Craft, and offers longer show hours before and some time after the other show, making a visit there especially convenient for those retail buyers who appreciate and sell the best in designer jewelry. Last year, hundreds of retailers took advantage of the timing to do business with many non-American and American designers whom they would not be able to see otherwise. For a few globalDESIGN exhibitors this is their only U.S. exhibition.

globalDESIGN will be presented February 18 - 20 in the third floor meeting suites of the Philadelphia Marriott hotel which is connected by a convenient walkway to the Buyer's Market show. Unlike mamy larger shows, globalDESIGN restricts its size to some two dozen designers -- including such notables as Michael Zobel, Alex Sepkus, Zoltan David, Gellner, Pedro Boregaard, Janis Kerman and Gurhan -- and fosters a relaxed, low pressure and somewhat pampered atmosphere for retailers. A light breakfast is offered in the morning and wine and cheese are available in the afternoon in the show's elegant, salon-like atmosphere. Hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Further information will be posted at the show's website -- www.globalDESIGNshow.com -- as it becomes available in the near future. Those desiring more immediate information can contact Cindy Edelstein, show director, at 914-738-8485.
